As a postscript to our new music show last night, I would like to direct you to the beautiful and slightly surreal video for the Dirty Projectors single ‘Stillness Is The Move’ off this years brilliant album Bitte Orca, which is out on Domino Records. My pick for an album spotlight, I believe all the hype around this record has been totally justified. In fact, this video has the only thing that the album doesn’t- Alpacas!
It seems to be a great year for strong follow ups to earlier great albums from the established names- Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest and Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion both instantly spring to mind, though I will say that I far prefer Bitte Orca to the Dirty Projectors earlier effort, Rise Above, which I found too operatic and musically verbose to listen to often.
But I digress.
‘Stillness Is The Move’ encompasses all the best parts of the Dirty Projectors in what Mr Pistolas rightly said could be a crossover hit. Clangy, yet melodic, soaring and rhythmic vocals, with a danceable beat that gets twitched out of place midway though the song- what, you didn’t honestly think that Mr Longstreth was gonna make it simple for you to dance did you? Nope, it’s complex all the way- beautiful, sunny and fun too. So get your shuffle on.
